Farmers in north central Alberta are pushing the lower limits of seeding rates in canola and barley. High seed costs have contributed to producers using lower seeding rates to offset these costs. Unfortunately, less than optimal stands can lead to reduced crop competition, reduced weed control, uneven maturity and lower net returns. Three canola fields and one barley field were chosen to assess the impact of seeding rate on overall crop health, competitiveness and yield. GPS, yield monitoring equipment and weigh wagons were used to assess the yields of these field trials.
